# Book texts: sources and rights

Written by `_tooling/texts_fetch.py`; do not edit by hand. Every text below is in the public domain in Egypt and Saudi Arabia (the author’s life + 50 years) and in the USA (published before 1931, or stated as public domain in the USA by Project Gutenberg). Texts come only from Project Gutenberg and Wikisource.

Project Gutenberg: the texts are used without the Project Gutenberg trademark, so its header, footer and licence are removed, as the PG trademark terms require. Wikisource: the texts are public domain; Wikisource’s own editorial layer is CC BY-SA 4.0, and is credited here with a link to the page used.

Project Gutenberg header, footer and licence removed (required by the PG trademark terms when the trademark is not used); front matter, contents and illustrations dropped; hard line breaks unwrapped; “--” made into dashes, italics kept, straight quotes made typographic; split into chapters. The opening “Etymology” and “Extracts” are left out; the reader starts at Chapter 1.
- **`two-cities`** (edition check: A Tale of Two Cities · Charles Dickens). Project Gutenberg header, footer and licence removed (required by the PG trademark terms when the trademark is not used); front matter, contents and illustrations dropped; hard line breaks unwrapped; “--” made into dashes, italics kept, straight quotes made typographic; split into chapters.

Project Gutenberg header, footer and licence removed (required by the PG trademark terms when the trademark is not used); front matter, contents and illustrations dropped; hard line breaks unwrapped; “--” made into dashes, italics kept, straight quotes made typographic; split into chapters.

- **`leaves`** (edition check: Leaves of Grass (1855)). Wikisource headers, navigation and page numbers removed; line breaks of the verse kept; straight quotes made typographic; split into the preface and the twelve poems. The 1855 poems have no titles: each is named by its first line, as on Wikisource.
- **`broken-wings`** (edition check: الأجنحة المتكسرة). Wikisource headers, navigation, page numbers and references removed; whitespace normalised (Arabic diacritics kept); very long paragraphs divided at sentence ends; split into chapters.
- **`kalila`** (edition check: كليلة ودمنة). Wikisource headers, navigation, page numbers and references removed; whitespace normalised (Arabic diacritics kept); very long paragraphs divided at sentence ends; split into chapters. The plan named the page “كليلة ودمنة (الأميرية، 1937)”, but that transcription is unproofread OCR with page numbers and footnotes run into the text, so the cleaner typed page “كليلة ودمنة” on the same site is used instead.
- **`hayy`** (edition check: حي بن يقظان). Wikisource headers, navigation, page numbers and references removed; whitespace normalised (Arabic diacritics kept); very long paragraphs divided at sentence ends; split into chapters. Wikisource gives the story and the closing address without the opening letter; the text has no divisions, so it is cut into eight parts at paragraph breaks.
- **`bukhala`** (edition check: البخلاء). Wikisource headers, navigation, page numbers and references removed; whitespace normalised (Arabic diacritics kept); very long paragraphs divided at sentence ends; split into chapters. Split at the Wikisource section headings (the page marks only some of the sections listed in its contents); long sections are cut at paragraph breaks; editors’ note numbers removed.

## Glosses

The `gloss.js` files (where present) are short factual notes written for Maktoob, not taken from any source text.

## Not fetched

- `muqaddimah`, `nights`, `shawqiyyat`, `nazarat`: too large or not cleanly structured on the allowed sources; they show “Coming soon”.
- `al-ayyam`: not fetched (open point 13); it stays sample-only.
