Who you’re buying from
Maktoob is run by Maktoob Publishing LLC, 14 Makram Ebeid St, Nasr City, Cairo, Egypt. Commercial register 000000, tax registration 000-000-000. In Saudi Arabia our VAT number is 300000000000003.
Write to help@maktoob.example or message us on WhatsApp at +20 10 0000 0000. By buying or reading on Maktoob you agree to these terms.
Your account
Your account is your phone number. You sign in with a one-time code by text message or WhatsApp; there’s no password to forget. A code works for 10 minutes, and three wrong codes pause sign-in for 15 minutes.
You stay signed in on a device for 30 days. Anyone who can read the messages on your phone can sign in as you, so keep it locked. If you change your number, change it in Account first, so your books move with you.
Prices, VAT and paying
Every price includes VAT, and the total you see before you pay is the total you pay. In Egypt, VAT is 14% on e-books, Plus, gifts, delivery and fees; printed books are exempt. In Saudi Arabia it’s 15%, and in the UAE 5%. You get a tax invoice for every payment, on WhatsApp and in Account.
- Egypt (EGP): card (Visa, Mastercard, Meeza), mobile wallet, InstaPay or Fawry. For printed copies, also cash on delivery (a 15 EGP fee, up to 3,000 EGP) and instalments with valU or Sympl from 500 EGP.
- Saudi Arabia (SAR): mada, Apple Pay, STC Pay or card.
- UAE (AED): card or Apple Pay.
A purchase is confirmed when your payment clears. A Fawry reference is valid for 24 hours; if it isn’t paid by then, the order is cancelled and nothing is owed.
Your e-books
The texts we publish are in the public domain. What you buy is our edition of them: a checked text, typeset for phones, with notes, and the reader to read it in. You get a personal licence to read that edition, with no time limit. If we ever close, we’ll give you at least 90 days to download every book you own.
- Read in the browser on any device signed in with your number.
- Download for offline reading on up to 5 devices at a time. Remove one in Account › Devices to free its place.
- Please don’t share, resell or copy our files. Quoting a passage you love is always fine.
Changing your mind about an e-book
You can ask for a refund within 48 hours of buying an e-book, as long as you haven’t opened it in the reader. Reading the free first chapter on the book page doesn’t count as opening it. After that, we refund an e-book only if it’s faulty and we can’t fix it.
Refunds go back the way you paid. Payments made with Fawry go to a mobile wallet or to Maktoob credit, whichever you choose. Returns and refunds has the details.
Maktoob Plus
Plus costs 79 EGP a month or 790 EGP a year (19 or 190 SAR). While it’s on, every e-book is included, you can send one free e-book gift a month, and in Egypt one standard delivery a month is free. First-time members can try it free for 7 days, starting with a card or mada.
- Card, mada, Apple Pay and STC Pay renew automatically. We remind you 3 days before each renewal.
- Fawry, InstaPay and mobile wallets renew by hand. We message you 3 days before each month with a way to pay; pay within 3 days of the due date to keep reading, or Plus pauses until you do.
- Cancel any time in Account › Plus. You keep reading until the end of the period you paid for, and we don’t charge again.
When Plus ends, books you read with it close, but your place, highlights and notes are kept. Books you bought stay yours.
Gifts
A gift e-book is sent as a link on WhatsApp on the day you choose, with your dedication set on its title page. The person you send it to opens it with their own phone number. An unclaimed link expires after 30 days; you can resend it from Account › Gifts. You can cancel a gift for a full refund until it’s claimed.
Printed copies
Printed copies ship within Egypt only and are paid in EGP. Every printed copy comes with its e-book, which opens straight away. Made-for-you copies are printed when you order, so they can’t be cancelled once printing starts. Delivery and Returns and refunds explain the rest.
Changes, problems and the law
If we change these terms, the new version applies to purchases made after the date at the top of this page; we’ll tell you on WhatsApp about any change that affects Plus. Purchases in Egypt are governed by Egyptian law, including the Consumer Protection Law (No. 181 of 2018); purchases in Saudi Arabia by Saudi law, including the E-Commerce Law. Nothing here takes away rights the law gives you.
If something goes wrong, talk to us first. Most problems are solved in one message.
